Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Vicky from I’d Rather Be At The Beach who posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My opening paragraph today comes from Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty which is due to be published on 4 October 2018.
Blurb
The retreat at health-and-wellness resort Tranquillum House promises total transformation.
Nine stressed city dwellers are keen to drop their literal and mental baggage, and absorb the meditative ambience while enjoying their hot stone massages.Miles from anywhere, without cars or phones, they have no way to reach the outside world. Just time to think about themselves, and get to know each other.
Watching over them is the resort’s director, a woman on a mission. But quite a different one from any the guests might have imagined.
For behind the retreat’s glamorous facade lies a dark agenda.
These nine perfect strangers have no idea what’s about to hit them . . . Amazon

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
1
Yao
‘I’m fine,’ said the woman. ‘There’s nothing wrong with me.’ She didn’t look fine to Yao. It was his first day as a trainee paramedic. His third call-out.
Yao wasn’t nervous, but he was in a hyper-vigilant state because he couldn’t bear to make even an inconsequential mistake. When he was a child, mistakes had made him wail inconsolably, and they still made his stomach cramp.
A single bead of perspiration rolled down the woman’s face, leaving a snail’s trail through her make-up. Yao wondered why women painted their faces orange, but that was not relevant.

Well having enjoyed six, yes six, books by this author I am pretty sure I’m in for a treat with this one but what do you think?
Would you keep reading?
I would definitely keep reading! But then I am a Liane Moriarty fan!

Yes it was a no-brainer for me – I know I’m going to love it before reading a single word!

I like Moriarty’s writing quite a lot, Cleo. And this one sounds very good indeed. I would definitely keep reading, and I hope you’re enjoying it. I like that idea for the setting…

She is very skilled and her eye for human behaviour and the way she presents it through her characters makes me smile every time.

I’m going to get a real reputation as Miss Picky because I’m wondering how a ‘single bead of perspiration’ can leave a ‘snail’s trail’ through a woman’s makeup. I guess it must be a pretty big bead of perspiration… The blurb sounds intriguing but I have to say I wouldn’t be tempted just on the basis of that first paragraph.

You carry on being picky Cathy 🙂 I find it interesting to see how my views change from the first paragraph alone to the entire book – although I know I’m going to enjoy this one because the author works for me as the six successful reads prove.

I don’t think I’ve read anything by the author so I probably come to it differently to someone who knows the author’s work. Just goes to show that not only should you not judge a book by its cover you probably shouldn’t from its first paragraph either!

I’m interested in knowing how the opening paragraph relates to the blurb. See what book MK is featuring at Girl Who Reads

I think we have to meet the strangers first… I can’t wait to find out though.

Interesting beginning. I would keep reading. I haven’t read anything by this author. This week I am featuring A Knife in the Fog by Bradley Harper – a historical mystery from my review stack. Happy reading!

Yes, I would keep reading. If you’ve already read six of the author’s books, they must be pretty good.

I do enjoy these, they are a little ‘lighter’ than my full-on crime fiction reads and the author has an eye for how people behave which makes me smile.

I want to go to the spa without all the drama, LOL. I would keep reading.

Yes probably not the relaxing spa I need either but good for a book 😉

I’d keep reading for sure given the quality of the author’s previous novels.

Hmm – I’ve read two – adored one, didn’t much enjoy the other, so I decided to wait for reviews on this one. So it’s up to you whether I’ll read it or not! No pressure…
