First Chapter ~ First Paragraph (June 16)

First Chapter

Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.

My current read is Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton which will be published on 2 July 2015.

Little Black Lies

What’s the worst thing your best friend could do to you?
Admittedly, it wasn’t murder. A moment’s carelessness, a tragic accident – and two children are dead. Yours.
Living in a small island community, you can’t escape the woman who destroyed your life. Each chance encounter is an agonizing reminder of what you’ve lost – your family, your future, your sanity.
How long before revenge becomes irresistible?
With no reason to go on living, why shouldn’t you turn your darkest thoughts into deeds?
So now, what’s the worst thing you can do to your best friend?

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro

Tuesday, 1 November 1994
I believe just about anyone can kill in the right circumstances, given enough motivation. The question is, am I there yet? I think I must be. Because lately, it seems, I’ve been thinking of little else.
It’s a minute past midnight. In two days time it will be the third of November. Two more days. Am I there yet?

Please note that this was taken from a proof copy

  1. Interesting premise, Cleo! And Bolton certainly can build suspense. I’ll be really keen to know what you thought of this when you’ve finished it.

  2. I’m definitely looking forward to this one and actually was going to read it a couple of weeks ago, but I realized that I hadn’t read the latest Lacey Flint book. So, I did that instead. And I think your teaser should say ‘kill’ not ‘ill’. LOL

I have heard such good things about Little Black Lies – the setting is interesting. Don’t know much about The Falklands, except for that little war thing. 🙂

    1. Thanks for pointing out the missing ‘k’ it makes all the difference 😉
It is an interesting setting and one that I know nothing about, Sharon Bolton has done a fantastic job of paining the picture for me though.

      1. She could have meant ‘ill’ and not ‘kill’. Not sure, but I do agree she does a good job of ‘paining’ the picture. 😉 😉

  3. I’m really looking forward to reading this one, hopefully this summer. I have heard such wonderful things about the author’s other books. I figured starting with her stand alone was a good place to start.

  4. Oh, I do want to know more! I read another book by this title, different author (Sandra Block), but they are nothing alike, so that’s good. I liked the other one, too. Adding it to my list. Thanks for visiting my blog.

      1. I’ve got a few of the 2nd July ones too – which is a problem since I still haven’t read all the 2nd June releases! A July birthday, eh? All the best people were born in July (she said, modestly)…

  5. It’s definitely a teaser. wonder why the author decided to start with Day 2? I suppose you would get to find out its counting down or is it up to something…
