I am currently reading The Murder Bag by Tony Parsons, the first in a new crime series featuring Detective Max Wolfe. This book has started with a shocking event, with the first death following shortly afterwards. I’m expecting the overall body count to be quite high.

My next read is going to be The Third Wife by Lisa Jewell, an author I love, and having seen the first review of this book today, I know I’m in for a treat!

Thanks Chrissi they are much deeper than the covers suggest, her last book The House We Grew Up in was about hoarding…. if you bought the book based on the cover alone it would be a big surprise!

I’d be interested in what you think of the Parsons book. I’ve heard so many mixed reports about it.
I’m currently beta reading a friends novel. Prior to that I read How to Fall by Jane Casey for crime book club and next I have an arc to read for another friend. I need to read faster.

I haven’t read How to Fall although I’ve read the Maeve Kerrigan series. I know the feeling about needing to read faster (or having more time to read) I’ve read the mixed reviews too so decided to see what I thought, so far I’m enjoying it…

I’ve enjoyed a few of Lisa Jewell’s early books, haven’t read any of her recent ones though. I’ll look out for your thoughts on The Third Wife, sounds good.

Lisa Jewell’s later books are much deeper than her early stuff and she is now one of my must-read authors.

Is that Tony Parsons the journalist? I didn’t realise he’d turned to crime fiction. Will be interested to hear what you think of it.

The Murder Bag is proving to be a very ‘readable’ book although there is a little too much explanation in places, but to be fair I’m not terribly far into this one yet. I really love Lisa Jewell’s later novels, they are full of quite heavy issues and her writing style has me hooked each time.

I’m intrigued by the Lisa Jewell – somehow the title, her name and the cover all combine to make it sound like chick-lit, but the blurb makes it sound meatier.

I really don’t know why they are pitched in this way. All of her later books are not what I would call ‘chick-lit’ they deal with quite big issues. The House that We Grew Up In was about a hoarder, not a typical subject for chick-lit! I love the author’s writing style which is really easy to read and I find I connect with the story instantly.

I loved reading a book about some really nice characters. This book is quite sad in places but it was an enjoyable read. Perfect for summer reading.

I’m reading a ton of children’s picture books for a course I’m taking on kid’s lit and poetic devices. One of the most beautiful I’ve read recently is “LIttle Night” by Yuyi Morales. Exquisitely illustrated and lyrically written, it should be a must for every child’s bedtime.
And I’ve just read Josephine by Patricia Hruby Powell (illustrated by Christian Robinson), a brilliant biography of Josephine Baker that is written in a jazzy style. Interesting for kids and parents.
One of the adult books I’m currently reading is “In Search of Duende” by Federico Garcia Lorca. Have just started it, and it promises to be a winner for those who are interested in poetry and the expression of “deep song.”
Clearly, I haven’t started my “summer” reading yet. 😀

The Murder Bag sounds intense; detective books make me so nervous though! The only crime/detective books that I am able to read are John Grisham’s; I don’t even know if that is a good thing or bad thing ha!

This probably wouldn’t be for you, the murder is quite in your face but they aren’t all like that. On the whole I prefer the psychological thrillers as especially those that have domestic settings but it depends what it is that makes you nervous.

That sounds like a wonderful course. I really miss having children to read to, as I particularly loved the early years with the wonderful illustrations. I had to go and check out Josephine, it looks wonderful. The reason I love blogging is we all have our own take on what makes a good read and those choices are made on such a complex web of reasoning 🙂

I really want to read The Murder Bag. And The Third Wife sounds really intriguing as well! Books that deal with secrets can be quite good- you’re always guessing, after all.

I think that’s why I like them. A secret could be big or small but it is always significant and it is hard to guess but that doesn’t stop me trying.

I’ll be curious to hear what you have to say about The Murder Bag (I was not overly impressed, I’m afraid – he is a bit too keen to show us he’s done his research).
As for misleading covers – publishers do seem to go for trends, don’t they – I’ve seen lots with fancy scripting or paper-cut-outs type covers lately which (either consciously or subconsciously) echo ‘The Shock of the Fall’ or else blackish covers to echo ‘Gone Girl’ etc.

I did mention to Margot in one of my comments that I have found The Murder Bag a little heavy on the description of procedure but to be honest I’ve had little time for reading this week so I haven’t got very far yet….
The cover issue is really odd although I’m sure publishers have their reasons…
