Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
This week my opener comes from The Marriage Lie by Kimberly Belle which will be published on 29 December 2016 by HarperCollins.
Blurb
She thought they had a perfect marriage….
When a plane crashes, Iris Griffiths watches the news unfold with horror…and then relief. Her beloved husband Will had just flown out from the same airport, but he was on a different flight.
So why is his name on the list of victims?
Surely there’s some mistake – her husband would never lie to her. Would he? But wading deeper into the truth of her husband’s deception, Iris begins to think the unthinkable.
Maybe she’s glad that he’s dead… Amazon

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
1
I awaken when a hand winds around my waist, pulling me head to heel against skin heated from sleep. I sigh and settle into my husband’s familiar form, fitting my backside into his front waking in his warmth. Will is a furnace when he sleeps, and I’ve always got some place on me that’s cold. This morning it’s my feet, and I wedge them between his two warm calves.
So an opening which illustrates easy affection but one we know won’t last…
So… would you keep reading? Please leave your thoughts in the comments box below.
Hi Cleo,
If I was faced with those opening lines alone, I would have no idea what genre of book I was dealing with and I have to admit I might think twice about carrying on.
However, given either the cover art or synopsis as well, decision made, I would definitely keep reading, which is why this one is heading for my list now 🙂
Thanks for sharing,
Yvonne

Since doing these posts I’m amazed at the variety of ways each book opens, rarely do you have a gripping first line and as you say with this one it’s impossible to tell what genre this book falls into! Thanks for visiting 🙂

I did keep on reading and I loved it. As you say the opening lines don’t give away the genre and if I hadn’t read the synopsis I doubt that I would have read this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Reading the first paragraph only, I like the intimacy of the story. I’d keep going. Now I’ll go back and read the blurb.

It does have a feeling of intimacy to it but for how long, I’m not too sure!

Everything about this book sounds great. The blurb is promising and the opening paragraph sounds good especially knowing that the calm won’t last. I look forward to your review. Happy reading 🙂

With those opening lines only, it is difficult to know what kind of book you’re in, but combined with the blurb, it is intriguing enough for me to want to grab a copy!

The synopsis for this one was irresistible and I agree that first paragraph makes it unclear what is going to come next!

This certainly does sound suspenseful, Cleo, from the synopsis. The first paragraph doesn’t give it away, but it sounds as though the intrigue builds as you go on. I’ll be interested in what you think when you’ve finished.

I would keep on reading…more for the description vs. the intro. Sounds good. (p.s. I like the snow – very festive)

I agree although the intro was nice enough it is the synopsis that has me eager to know more!

I love the cover. That alone would make me pick this one up.
Mine this week is a steampunk series: https://wp.me/p3Nz8P-15T

Not immediately grabbed by the opening paragraph, but it’s too early to tell how good it will be and it is in my TBR. The blurb is intriguing.

This scene does a great job of showing the couple’s intimacy. I’d keep reading to find out more about them, especially after reading the synopsis.
Thank you for visiting my blog. I appreciate your comments.

Oh yes… I love the depiction of an easy intimacy between these two – even if it isn’t going to last. It’s harder to write than it looks, so I know the author is a good writer, for starters:). Thank you for sharing.
