Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Vicky from I’d Rather Be At The Beach who posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My excerpt this week comes from The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, a book marketed as an original high concept murder mystery written by Stuart Turton which will be published on 8 February 2018.
Blurb
‘Somebody’s going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won’t appear to be a murder and so the murderer won’t be caught. Rectify that injustice and I’ll show you the way out.’
It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.
But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.
The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath… Amazon

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
Day One
I forget everything between footsteps.
‘Anna!’ I finish shouting, snapping my mouth shut in surprise. My mind has gone blank. I don’t know who Anna is or why I’m calling her name. I don’t even know how I got here. I’m standing in a forest, shielding my eyes from the spitting rain. My heart is thumping, I reek of sweat and my legs are shaking. I must have been running but I can’t remember why.
‘How did – ‘ I’m cut short by the sight of my own hands. They’re bony, ugly. A stranger’s hands. I don’t recognise them at all. Feeling the first touch of panic, I try to recall something else about myself: a family member, my address, age, anything, but nothing’s coming. I don’t even have a name.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I’ll be honest, I’m not sure whether or not I will find the repeating of the day in order to find the murderer innovative or annoying, but the opener definitely has me wanting to find out.
What do you think? Would you keep reading?
Cleo, I haven’t read a lot of first-person narrative, probably under five books so far, because I’m not comfortable with the style; though, I know I’ve missed out on many a good book.

I know you are not alone in your aversion to this style. Fortunately once I get into a swing of a book it doesn’t bother me at all.

Would totally read on although I have to admit the cover and blurb don’t look like they ‘fit’ with it if you know what I mean? Although only being a chapter how can I tell really! Intriguing premise … hmmmm

I do know what you mean 🙂

Hmm… I doubt it but I’ll be interested to hear whether it works for you or not. For once, the present tense does seem appropriate though… 😉

I’m interested too – I’m glad you approve of the present tense for once 😉

Definitely intrigued by the opener. The repetition reminds me a little of Stephen King’s,11/22/63. I hope it works for this story. Happy reading.

Hmm….interesting way to tell the story. I’m not sure if that structure would be for me, but it’s innovative, Cleo. I’ll be interested in what you think of it.

I vowed that I would try something a little different to the norm in 2018 and I really think this one fits the bill – I will report back in due course.

Yes I can imagine with the concept that it will be one of those books you either love or hate – I’ll let you know which camp I fall into.

Oh, wow, what an intriguing concept….and I might also be frustrated by the repeating of the day…but Adam finding himself in the body of different characters each time might make it fascinating. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

The author answered and said they go to a different part of the house so see different things which makes me less anxious about repetition – I’m looking forward to reading something that I’m sure will feel different.

I think this sounds very interesting – in a Groundhog Day kind of way. Do you know the movie Groundhog Day – repeating a day over and over – well, there wasn’t a murder and Bill Murray was himself over and over, but still…let us know what you think soon. OK?

I do know the movie, in fact I nearly referenced it here but then it sounds like we have different characters here – I will be reading it soon and will let you know my thoughts soon 🙂

The first paragraph definitely grabbed me – and I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews for this title. I’ve not yet added it to my TBR though… perhaps I am a bit put-off by the repetitive nature of the plot.

I’ll let you know how I get on – according to the author via twitter it isn’t the same day repeated, the characters are in different places, so I’m now thinking it is a bit like a puzzle?

This isn’t a genre I usually read, but that intro sure did grab my attention. I may step out of my box and give it a try.

I’m really looking forward to this! You make a good point about whether it will become repetitious, but I’ll definitely be giving this a go!

Stuart actually contacted me via twitter and said the characters are in different rooms so it isn’t really repetitive which has quelled my anxiety on that front – I’m eager to get stuck in now.
