Hosted by Lipsy Lost & Found my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I am reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words
I am currently reading Are You Watching Me? by Sinéad Crowley which I picked up purely because I wanted to, it’s not a review copy and nor does it count towards my Mount TBR, I just needed something to escape into and what better than a crazy stalker and a murder?
Liz Cafferky is on the up. Rescued from her dark past by the owner of a drop-in centre for older men, Liz soon finds herself as the charity’s face – and the unwilling darling of the Dublin media.
Amidst her claustrophobic fame, Liz barely notices a letter from a new fan. But then one of the centre’s clients is brutally murdered, and Elizabeth receives another, more sinister note.
Running from her own ghosts, Liz is too scared to go to the police. And with no leads, there is little Sergeant Claire Boyle can do to protect her. Amazon
I have recently finished Death in the Stars by Frances Brody which stars Kate Shackleton as a sleuth in the 1920s, the ninth book in the series.
Blurb
Yorkshire, 1927. Eclipse fever grips the nation, and when beloved theatre star Selina Fellini approaches trusted sleuth Kate Shackleton to accompany her to a viewing party at Giggleswick School Chapel, Kate suspects an ulterior motive.
During the eclipse, Selina’s friend and co-star Billy Moffatt disappears and is later found dead in the chapel grounds. Kate can’t help but dig deeper and soon learns that two other members of the theatre troupe died in similarly mysterious circumstances in the past year. With the help of Jim Sykes and Mrs Sugden, Kate sets about investigating the deaths – and whether there is a murderer in the company.
When Selina’s elusive husband Jarrod, injured in the war and subject to violent mood swings, comes back on the scene, Kate begins to imagine something far deadlier at play, and wonders just who will be next to pay the ultimate price for fame . . . Amazon
Next I plan on reading The Dreams of Bethany Mellmoth by William Boyd
Blurb
A philandering art dealer tries to give up casual love affairs – seeking only passionate kisses as a substitute.
A man recounts his personal history through the things he has stolen from others throughout his life.
A couple chart the journey of their five year relationship backwards, from awkward reunion to lovelorn first encounter. And, at the heart of the book, a 24-year old young woman, Bethany Mellmoth, embarks on a year-long journey of wishful and tentative self-discovery.
The Dreams of Bethany Mellmoth depicts the random encounters that bring the past bubbling to the surface; the impulsive decisions that irrevocably shape a life; and the endless hesitations and loss-of-nerve that wickedly complicate it. These funny, surprising and moving stories are a resounding confirmation of Boyd’s powers as one of our most original and compelling storytellers. Amazon
What do you think? Any of these take your fancy? Please do leave your thoughts in the comments box below.
I like the sound of The Dreams of Bethany Mellmoth and the cover is stunning!!

I so want to read Are You Watching Me?, Cleo! I really enjoyed her first book, Can Anybody Help Me? and I’ve been looking forward to this one. I’ll be interested in what you think of it when you’ve finished it.

Are You Watching Me sounds like one I would like to read, just as an escape, too. There is nothing better than just relaxing into a good book. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

I’ve been so short of time lately and so it was good to read a book ‘just because’

Are you not supposed to escape from stalking murderers rather than to? 😂
I used to be a big fan of Boyd but haven’t read any of his books in a while. This one does sound intriguing. Will be interested in how you find it.

Are You Watching Me? sounds brilliant! I did just like you, well, with a review copy but of my favorite series, to try and escape the world for a bit, too much work and issues. Wishing you a good bookish week, Cleo! x

It was really refreshing just to pick a book up because I wanted to read it – life has just been far too busy for the last few weeks.

I admire you for reading ‘just because you wanted to’ Cleo. My TBR is starting to take over my life. In order to meet all my yearly challenges, both those I stated publicly and those that are self-imposed, I feel that I cannot do that just now. Stupid, I know. There is a book that is just calling out to me that is not on my review TBR and I would love to read it. FYI it is “The trouble with goats and sheep”. Have you read it?

Thank you – the last few weeks (well really months) have become so incredibly busy that I just needed to switch off and read something I wanted to and it worked – I do want to read The Trouble with Goats and Sheep, I saw it around loads at the time it was published in the UK and then my best friend read it and was shocked that I hadn’t yet – that was probably about a year ago… I will get to it soon!

Awesome for reading a book just because you want to. My “goal” for next year is just to read books because I want to. No challenges, no readalongs. Just my own whims! I’m really looking forward to it. I should try one of those Kate Shackleton mysteries sometime.

I have a dilemma as I love discovering new books but I also had such fun doing the 20 Books of Summer which were reads from my own shelf that I hankered over just choosing something instead of slavishly following the spreadsheet – it was great. The Kate Shackleton mysteries are lovely, the glamour of the 1920s is very seductive.

I’m looking forward to The Dreams of Bethany Mellmoth but it’ll be weeks yet before I get to it. So you can be the canary and test it out first – if you get out of the mine alive, then I’ll be able to look forward to it even more… 😉
