Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
This week my opener is from Give Me The Child by Mel McGrath a psychological thriller which was published in July 2017.

Do we get the children we deserve?Cat’s research tells her there’s no such thing as evil. Her history tells her she’s paranoid. But her instincts tell her different. First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
PART ONE
24 July
CHAPTER ONE
My first thought when the doorbell woke me was that someone had died. Most likely Michael Walsh. I turned onto my side, pulled at the outer corners of my eyes to rid them of the residue of sleep and blinked myself awake. It was impossible to tell if it was late or early. Though the bedroom was as hot and muggy as it had been when Tome and I had gone to bed, Tom was no longer beside me. Now I was alone.

Well I don’t know about you but I have quite a few questions just from that first paragraph.
What do you think? Would you keep reading?
Hi Cleo,
This one would be a definite ‘keeper’ for me!
I needed to read no further than ‘Do we get the children we deserve’, to know that.
GR ratings and reviews are all consistently good and as a debut novel, the book has a premise which is challenging and intriguing.
I wonder what it is in our psyche which instills the belief that a late night call or visitor can only be bringing bad news. Do we like to fool ourselves that bad news never happens during daylight hours?
Thanks for sharing 🙂

That’s what had me hooked too! As to your last point it is odd how we assume bad things only happen at night as realistically we must deal with far more in the daytime!

Thew book certainly sounds interesting. The blurb and the first paragraphs already raise so many questions. Now I want to know where Tom is. I am also curious about Ruby so I would definitely keep reading 🙂

That’s a very interesting first line, Cleo! I really do want to know the larger story. And I want to know about Tom, too. I’ll be interested in what you have to say about this.

Cleo, I’d continue reading because I never give up on a book once I start reading it. As I keep saying, every book eventually redeems itself.

You give books more of a chance than I do these days – but there aren’t many I don’t finish!

This sounds like a book that raises many issues – maybe a good one for a book group to discuss. I’d continue reading.

Oh, a ringing doorbell always sets off alarms with me. I hate that sound…if I’m not expecting anyone. Nobody comes unannounced to my house unless it’s something bad. So now I am eager to keep reading, to find out what is happening. It can’t be anything good, right? Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

Maybe it’s just me, but that blurb makes this book sound like full-on horror – like The Omen or something! If little Ruby’s head starts to swivel, RUN!!!!

If I read the blurb + the first paragraph then I would continue reading.
If I read just the first paragraph, then I probably wouldn’t.

Definitely yes. I’d continue.
