This Week in Books (February 8)

www.This Week In Books

Hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I am reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words

At the moment I am reading The Skeleton Road by Val McDermid, another for my Mount TBR Challenge, and also a series that I am reading in completely the wrong order! I read the fourth in the Katie Pirie series last year, Out of Bounds, and this is the third!

The Skeleton Road

When a skeleton is discovered hidden at the top of a crumbling, gothic building in Edinburgh, Detective Chief Inspector Karen Pirie is faced with the unenviable task of identifying the bones. As Karen’s investigation gathers momentum, she is drawn deeper into a dark world of intrigue and betrayal.

Meanwhile, someone is taking the law into their own hands in the name of justice and revenge — but when present resentment collides with secrets of the past, the truth is more shocking than anyone could have imagined . . . Amazon

Now I’ve been reading quite slowly this year, but as I’m off for a little bit of rest and relaxation for few days, I’m going to make up for it by posting two books that I hope to read while I’m away… The complex hand-luggage rules for the different airlines that will ferry me to and from the mainland mean that kindle reads are a must (although I have to find some space for a paperback just in case of electronic failure) if I want some clothes to wear. I then need to factor in the fact that most of my reading will happen whilst sitting at airports, on planes and trains means that reads that are engaging enough to drown out the other passengers, but still allow me to juggle the constant putting a book aside to queue, to watch various boards and to make sure I don’t miss my stop!

As you can imagine I’ve spent far too long pondering which books to choose but I’ve finally come up with a couple.

My Sweet Revenge by Jane Fallon looks like a fun read and perfect for journeys.

I want to make my husband fall back in love with me.
Let me explain. This isn’t an exercise in 1950s wifeydom. I haven’t been reading articles in old women’s magazines. ‘Twenty ways to keep your man’. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
I want him to fall back in love with me so that when I tell him to get the hell out of my life he’ll care. He won’t just think, ‘Oh good’.
I want it to hurt.

Paula has had Robert’s back since they got together as drama students.
She gave up her dreams so he could make it.
Now he’s one of the nation’s most popular actors.
And Paula’s just discovered he’s having an affair.
She’s going to remind Robert just what he’s sacrificing.
And then she’s going to break his heart like he broke hers.
It will be her greatest acting role ever.
Revenge is sweet.
Isn’t it? Amazon

And if I have a chance Sewing The Shadows Together by Alison Baillie, the next book to star on Put A Book on the Map feature.

Can you ever get over the death of your sister? Or of your best friend?

More than 30 years after 13-year-old Shona McIver was raped and murdered in Portobello, the seaside suburb of Edinburgh, the crime still casts a shadow over the lives of her brother Tom and her best friend Sarah.

“Shona had been gone for so long but the memories still came unexpectedly, sometimes like a video from the past, sometimes distorted dreams, but she was always there.”

When modern DNA evidence shows that the wrong man was convicted of the crime, the case is reopened. So who did kill Shona? Sarah and Tom are caught up in the search for Shona’s murderer, and suspicions fall on family and friends. The foundations of Sarah’s perfect family life begin to crumble as she realises that nothing is as it appears. Dark secrets from the past are uncovered, and there is another death, before the identity of the real killer is finally revealed…

Set in Edinburgh, the Outer Hebrides and South Africa, Sewing the Shadows Together is a thoroughly modern murder mystery that keeps the reader guessing to the end. Filled with characters who could easily be friends, family or people we work with, it asks the question:

Do we ever really know the people closest to us? Amazon

  1. You have two books set in Edinburgh this week then, so that’s double the choice for your challenge (okay, I know that ‘Sewing The Shadows Together’ does move location a few times), or were you thinking of using The Outer Hebrides perhaps?

I do love a good Val McDermid book and this one is on my list, so I shall be interested to see what you think about it. From what I can remember, generally Val’s books work quite well as stand alones, so that should be okay.

Happy Reading for the rest of the week 🙂

  2. Have fun with My Sweet Revenge, it’s perfect for a journey! I am a massive fan of Val McDermid but for some reason I didn’t get on with Skeleton Road.

I’m currently reading Lost for Words (from Netgalley) and loving it!

    Happy reading 😊

    1. I’m sure My Sweet Revenge will make the journey far more enjoyable 🙂 Having started Skeleton Road and although I’m enjoying it, the background piece is a bit on the dense side but so far… Glad to hear you’ve found a great book!

  3. I’m glad it’s not just me who takes a spare paperback ( or two!) away in case of Kindle failure! Enjoy your break away and your reading. Your choices are on my wishlist.

  4. My crazy love for order won’t allow me to read a series in disorder if I am aware of it, which is a bit of a hassle!
I’ve heard so much about Val McDermid that she’s on my Intimidating Author List! I’ve been waiting for My Sweet Revenge to get delivered, it shouldn’t too long now, I just love the cover and the blurb of this one! I hope it’s as “yummy” as it sounds! Happy reading!

    1. I’m not quite sure why Val McDermid is on your ‘intimidating author’ list but she really shouldn’t be – she’s great and very accessible.
I think My Sweet Revenge will be a perfect travelling companion!

  5. I was going to say some lighter reading at last, but it’s only one out of three, so I’m not sure that counts! I won’t have time to participate this week, but I’ve just finished a German book by Mechtild Borrmann – To Clear the Air (which was a bit upsetting both in theme and graphic descriptions). I’ve just embarked upon City of Drowned Souls, which is set in Catalonia, although written by a Welsh writer. And after that I’ll probably read Janet Frame’s autobiography (I wanted to read her novel Faces in the Water for an online book club, but it wasn’t available at my library, so I had to make do with this instead).

    1. My antenna started twitching when I saw the words Welsh writer. So of course I had to find out more – seems this author has written a whole series and I knew nothing about him. Will try to remedy that later in the year

  7. I hope you’ll have a lovely trip, Cleo, and a very good time. You’ve chosen some great-sounding books to keep you company! And I know just what you mean about packing. I rely so much on my Kindle when I travel. Safe journey!

  8. I recently read Alison Baillie’s Sewing the Shadows Together and every minute spent was absolutely worth it. I gave Alison 5 stars on Amazon and Goodreads. So if you haven’t checked it out yet, there’s no time like the present.

  9. All of these look lovely! I’ve read several of Val McDermid’s books, but there are a bunch more to go. The ones I’ve read have all been Tony Hill/Carol Jordan books and A PLACE OF EXECUTION (which is wonderful). Enjoy your trip. Yes, the KIndle and I are travel companions, but I do understand the backup of a print book. I’m off to see about SEWING THE SHADOWS TOGETHER.

  10. I’ve been reading Corpus by Rory Clement. Set in the 1930s, the main protagonist is a Cambridge academic and it’s about a plot against the state round about the time the Edward and Mrs Simpson melodrama was playing itself out. I’m enjoying it.

  11. Your dilemma of what to take with you for a trip sounds horribly familiar to me. Oh the number of times I change my mind when planning what to read. You want something absorbing so you can block out the mayhem around you in most airports/railway stations etc but it can’t be too absorbing or you miss all the announcements……
