Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My opening paragraph this week comes from Tattletale by Sarah J Naughton which is going to be published on 26 January 2017.
Blurb
One day changes Jody’s life forever.

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
BEFORE
On a clear morning the sun shines so strongly through the stained glass it looks as if the concrete floor is awash with blood.
But it’s past eight in the evening now and the only light comes from the wall lamps on each floor. Their dim illumination reveals a slowly spreading pool of pitch or tar.
Blood doesn’t look like blood in the dark.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
So what do you think? A lot of mention of blood in those few lines but no real clues yet…
Would you keep reading? Have you read this book – Please add your thoughts in the comments box below?
Oh, I am now very curious. I love that cover, the blurb, and in the excerpts I feel a sense of foreboding. Thanks for sharing, and here’s mine: “The Marriage Lie”

Oh, I’m not sure I like my books to start out in a pool of blood! I did read one crime novel last year and it was great, but those scenes of describing carnage aren’t my favourite bit!

Fair enough and understandable 🙂

This one not for me …the blurb and opening lines a touch too formulaic …

This is an intriguing idea, seeing how differently readers react to the hugely important first sentence / paragraph. For me, this sample didn’t work at all. I would have promptly closed the book and moved on. The problem (for me) was that the first sentence directed me to a direction which was then abruptly reversed. I had to read it again to see what was going on – and I wanted to re-write it.

You make a good point about how different people react to these – the reversal was exactly what pulled my interest. I have to confess I don’t think I’d ever choose a book solely on the first paragraph and some of the ones I’ve enjoyed most haven’t instantly grabbed me – but sometimes I read these and can see how the style just works (for me)

Ah, yes. I’d continue, as you’d probably surmise. Look forward to hearing what you think. Can’t get enough of those crime thrillers. 🙂

Oh, that last sentence of the paragraph certainly got my attention! It sounds like a really intriguing premise, too, Cleo. I’ll be very interested in what you think as you go on.

Haven’t heard of this one but, I like the cover. The intro needs something more IMO.

I’m on the fence about this one, it didn’t really grab me with the blurb or first paragraph. I’ll be interested in reading your review for sure:)

I’d definitely want to keep reading this book – it sounds very intriguing. I’m really trying not to add to my TBR this year but I’m so tempted to put this on my wishlist!

That’s how I thought I’d get around reducing my TBR – I hope you are better at it than I am 😉

I have a feeling that I’m not going to be very good at this reducing the TBR stuff but we’ll see.

Hmm.. I think you’ll have to work quite hard to convince me on this one! Another brother/sister though – I wonder if that’s going to be a new “thing”…

All very strange. And suspicious. I would want to read this book based on the synopsis, but the writing doesn’t compel me.

The two points of view don’t actually mesh, do they? I’d keep reading — it sounds like a really good psychological thriller, hopefully without being too scary. Here’s my intro/teaser today from Leopard at the Door: http://wp.me/p4DMf0-1rl
