Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My opening this week comes from Watching Edie by Camilla Way which I was sent for review by lovereading.
Blurb
Beautiful, creative, a little wild… Edie was the kind of girl who immediately caused a stir when she walked into your life. And she had dreams back then—but it didn’t take long for her to learn that things don’t always turn out the way you want them to.
Now, at thirty-three, Edie is working as a waitress, pregnant and alone. And when she becomes overwhelmed by the needs of her new baby and sinks into a bleak despair, she thinks that there’s no one to turn to…
But someone’s been watching Edie, waiting for the chance to prove once again what a perfect friend she can be. It’s no coincidence that Heather shows up on Edie’s doorstep, just when Edie needs her the most. So much has passed between them—so much envy, longing, and betrayal. And Edie’s about to learn a new lesson: those who have hurt us deeply—or who we have hurt—never let us go, not entirely… Goodreads

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
PART ONE
After
Outside my kitchen window the long afternoon empties of light. I look at London stretched out far below, my dripping hands held poised above the sink. The doorbell rings, one long high peal; the broken intercom vibrates. The view from up here, it’s incredible, like you’re flying. Deptford and Greenwich, New Cross and Erith, then the river, and beyond that there’s the Gherkin, over there’s the Shard. From my top-floor flat here on Telegraph Hill you can see forever and as usual it calms me, soothes me: how big it is, how small I am, how far from where I used to be.
The doorbell rings more urgently – whoever it is putting their finger on that buzzer and holding it there. The night hovers.

That book sounds right up my street – I love living my ‘normal’ life and escaping to a reading sea of crime so I will look out for this book

This one certainly sounds as though there are a lot of layers to it, Cleo. And now I’m curious as to the past relationship between the two women. I’ll be really keen to know what you think of it.

Thank you Margot – so far it’s exceeding my expectations and I do love it when the past impacts on the present in my books.

I like that the author immediately tells us the story is set in London. I’d keep reading to find out who’s at the door and why they’re so insistent.
Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

Isn’t it a clever way to set the scene right from the off? Thanks for returning my call 🙂

I got a little chill from reading the opening lines, suspecting that bad things are just around the corner…or at the door. Interesting cover, too. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

I really liked the intro here, it seems like it will be a well written book…plus who can a bit of single white female type best friend badness?

I have found quite a few books recently where the chief relationship is friendship – glad I don’t have friends like these 😉

The very end is intriguing…I’m more curious by the actual summary than the opening lines though!

Yes the first part is scene setting, very good scene setting but no immediate action – it gets good really quickly though.

I don’t think I would trust that friend, but it sounds like Edie won’t listen to me. 🙂 I like the opening you shared. I would love a view like that!

Doesn’t it sound amazing? As for the friend, well it certainly sounds unlike my idea of friendship 😉
