This Week In Books

Lypsyy Lost & Found my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I am reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words

I have just started reading Daisy In Chains by the magnificent Sharon Bolton

Famous killers have fan clubs.
Hamish Wolfe is no different. Locked up for the rest of his life for the abduction and murder of three young women, he gets countless adoring letters every day. He’s handsome, charismatic and very persuasive. His admirers are convinced he’s innocent, and that he’s the man of their dreams.
Who would join such a club?
Maggie Rose is different. Reclusive and enigmatic; a successful lawyer and bestselling true-crime writer, she only takes on cases that she can win.
Hamish wants her as his lawyer, he wants her to change his fate. She thinks she’s immune to the charms of a man like this. But maybe not this time . . .

I have just finished My Husband’s Wife by Jane Corry which has had me enthralled with the story split between the past and present. My Husband’s Wife will be published on 26 May 2016 – look out for my review coming soon!

FIRST COMES LOVE. THEN COMES MARRIAGE. THEN COMES MURDER…
When lawyer Lily marries Ed, she’s determined to make a fresh start. To leave the secrets of the past behind.
But then she meets Joe. A convicted murderer who reminds Lily of someone she once knew, and who she becomes obsessed with freeing.
But is he really innocent?
And who is she to judge? Amazon

Next up is going to be Die of Shame by Mark Billingham who hasn’t disappointed me yet so I’m braced for the ride, and doesn’t it sound good?

Die of Shame

Every Monday evening, six people gather in a smart North London house to talk about addiction. There they share their deepest secrets: stories of lies, regret, and above all, shame.
Then one of them is killed – and it’s clear one of the circle was responsible.
Detective Inspector Nicola Tanner quickly finds her investigation hampered by the strict confidentiality that binds these people and their therapist together. So what could be shameful enough to cost someone their life?
And how do you find the truth when denial and deception are second nature to all of your suspects? Amazon

  1. I’ve just finished reading Loving Le Corbusier which is about Yvonne Gallis, the architect Le Corbusier’s wife. For research I’m reading Adam Hochschild’s Spain in our Hearts about American involvement in the Spanish Civil War and for fun I’m reading Inceptio by Alison Morton – it’s a thriller set in … well the premise is that the Roman Empire didn’t fall and that there’s a country in Europe called Roma Nova which has survived and the society is a matriarchy (I might have that last bit wrong) Alternate history I think is the correct description … It’s not the usual thing I read but I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

    1. What a fascinating mix of books – I don’t think I’ve read any ‘alternate history’ but Inceptio sounds intriguing for sure. Good to hear you are enjoying it and I do hope the research is coming along well.

    1. I’m looking forward to Die of Shame too – I’m a fan of Mark Billingham although his books are slightly darker than what I usually read – can’t wait to see what this one has in store. Thanks for visiting and leaving your link.

  2. I just finished reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”, an autobiography by the late Maya Angelou, and also “So Much Synth”, a poetry collection by Brenda Shaughnessy. Brenda is my fav! I just did a review of the book here: https://heartwhatartareyou.wordpress.com/2016/05/25/bomb-threat-so-much-synth-by-brenda-shaughnessy-a-review/

“Daisy in Chains” vaguely reminds me of a book I noticed on Fantastic Fiction a while ago: I think it was called “Black-Eyed Susans”. Yup, I just looked it up. It’s by Julia Heaberlin. Just judging by these other choices, I think it would be another book you’d enjoy.

  3. I really liked Daisy in Chains! The one from Mark Billingham sounds interesting but I’ve read one of his books (Bloodline) and it just wasn’t it for me so I don’t really know yet.

  5. Another week where I’d read all of your picks. I haven’t read any Mark Billingham for a while though so that has made me think I should pick him up again.

  6. Sounds like you’ve gone for stalwarts, where you know what you’re getting – it’s quite comforting to go through such a period occasionally, isn’t it? Authors whose books you always look forward to…

  7. I really like the sound of Daisy in Chains so I’m adding it to my TBR. Will be looking forward to your review of My Husband’s Wife too as I’ve seen quite a bit of hype around it.
