Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My first paragraph for the first time in weeks comes from a book without a prologue! Hats off to Linda Huber and her latest book Chosen Child.
Blurb
A disappearance. A sudden death. A betrayal of the worst kind.
Ella longs for a child of her own, but a gruesome find during an adoption process deepens the cracks in her marriage. A family visit starts off a horrifying chain of events, and Ella can only hope she won’t lose the person she loves most of all.
Amanda is expecting her second child when her husband vanishes. She is tortured by thoughts of violence and loss, but nothing prepares her for the shocking conclusion to the police investigation.
And in the middle of it all, a little girl is looking for a home of her own with a ‘forever’ mummy and daddy… Goodreads

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
CHAPTER ONE
Saturday 3rd May
Ella held her breath, squinting at Rick ashe inched the Peugeot into the narrow space between a battered Clio and a shiny new BMW. He was nervous – of course he was, she was too – and it didn’t make the manoeuvre any easier. The Peugeot crept forward until Rick yanked the handbrake up, and Ella’s shoulders sagged in relief. A scrape on anyone’s car would have been the worst possible start to their first adoption party.
Please note this excerpt come from a proof copy
So what do you think? This is a fairly sedate start to a gripping book but…the killer question; do you want to know more?
If you have an opening to share, please leave your link in the comments box below.
The first paragraph didn’t move me, but everything else did. I’d like to read this book.

The premise grabs me more than the opener. On the basis of the summary, I’d keep reading.

Oh, this sounds so compelling, Cleo! Admittedly, the overview more than that first paragraph, but still, I’m interested.

Thank you Margot – I have to say it didn’t take long for the story to get into its stride.

I like the blurb more than the first paragraph. However, yes, I’d continue and will be on the lookout for this one.

I like the blurb, but am not sure about the opening. I’d need to read a little more before making a decision.

I think this has potential from the club but, the intro was kind of blah.

Now that you mention it, my book didn’t have a prologue either. I’m so used to books having them these days. Haha I love the cover of the book you’re featuring today. I do like the opening, but agree, it doesn’t give away the type of book the blurb describes. Sounds like it will be a good one!

It’s only since doing these posts that I’ve realised quite how many of my books do have a prologue so it was worth a mention! It has proved to be a good read.

The summary certainly had my attention. This first paragraph sort of but it definitely shows the tension the characters are experiencing.

Oh, you had me at children seeking their “forever mummy and daddy.” These kinds of stories reel me in, and I want to know more! Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

It was an unusual start to a story which covers an awful lot of ground while being a thriller at the same time – quite unique.

The no-prologue and the past tense (yay!) appeals more than the blurb. I’ll wait to see what you think of it…

After reading the synopsis, I’m interested in this book (even though “gruesome” rarely appeals to me). The opening didn’t grab me, but that’s okay. I’m still curious about the adoption.
My Tuesday post features THE GIVER.

There’s a lot of subtext in the first paragraph. So much is said without actually being said.

I really like the blurb here but not so keen on the intro. I am interested in the idea of adoption…though these normally end up with a child from hell 😀

Well this is an adoption with different problems entirely…

I’m wondering what the ‘gruesome find’ is

I’m not sure the intro grabs me, but the blurb does. I’d keep reading!

This intrigues me. I like the way that the anxiety is brought to life. (Well, you know, not really.. anxiety, bleh, but it’s impressive when an author can make you feel the way his characters do)
