PROLOGUE
It had been easy to get him alone. He’d played right into her hands and all she’d had o do was flash a smile at him. Laugh at his jokes. Pretend to be interested in his words.
One
Eighteen Years Ago
I stare at y baby as I hold her in my arms and can’t believe we’ve produced something so beautiful. She may have arrived years to early but I wouldn’t change a thing. I only hope Matt feels the same. He seems out of his comfort zone, but then so am I. Sometimes I watch him holding her nervously, as if she is china that will break in his hand, but the smile on his face speaks louder than any of his doubts. They have all gone now, vanquished by our beautiful Helena.

Do you know what I notice? At virtually all writing workshops, instructors and agents, editors and publishers say: ‘No prologues please’ and yet so many published books do have prologues.

This sounds like a really compelling premise for a story, Cleo. I’ve noticed, though, how many books lately have been about missing and abducted children. I wonder why that topic… Hmmm….

It never ceases to amaze me how subjects seem to come in waves – after all when you think how long it takes to write a book all these authors must have come up with the subject independently….

Another lost child book… this must be the week! I do love a dark psychological thriller though, so would give it a try.

A book with a similar theme, What She Lost, about a woman who snatched a baby and raised the child as her own for over 20 years.

Yes, I’d keep reading. I have a copy of this one and am very interested. I also think that like mentioned above, the ‘snatched child’ theme is on the rise.

It’s a good job we don’t all follow the trend in real life isn’t it?
