Hosted by Lypsyy Lost & Found my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I am reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words
At the moment I am reading Nora Webster by Colm Tóibín, a book that has been on my TBR for far too long. It is in fact over a year since I read Fiction Fan’s review of this book!
Blurb
It is the late 1960s in Ireland. Nora Webster is living in a small town, looking after her four children, trying to rebuild her life after the death of her husband. She is fiercely intelligent, at times difficult and impatient, at times kind, but she is trapped by her circumstances, and waiting for any chance which will lift her beyond them.
Colm Tóibín’s Nora is a character as resonant as Anna Karenina or Madame Bovary and Nora Webster is a novel that illuminates our own lives in a way that is rare in literature. Its humanity and compassion forge an unforgettable reading experience. NetGalley
I have recently finished the very enjoyable The Killing of Polly Carter by Robert Thorogood.
You can read the synopsis and an excerpt of this one in yesterday’s post
Next up I’m catching up on the Nicci French days of the week series with Friday On My Mind
Blurb
When a bloated corpse is found floating in the River Thames the police can at least sure that identifying the victim will be straightforward. Around the dead man’s wrist is a hospital band. On it are the words Dr F. Klein.
But psychotherapist Frieda Klein is very much alive. And, after evidence linking her to the murder is discovered, she becomes the prime suspect.
Unable to convince the police of her innocence, Frieda is forced to make a bold decision in order to piece together the terrible truth before it’s too late either for her or for those she loves. NetGalley

I’m making a concerted effort to read these books, both of which have been on the TBR far too long. Thanks for visiting Laurel!

I just finished reading ‘Friday on My Mind’ at the weekend, as I’d fallen a little out of the loop with the Frieda Klein series, but I always enjoy a bit of Nicci French.
The Death in Paradise series sounds like a fun bit of escapism – perhaps even better during the winter months.
I’m currently (re)reading Stefan Zweig novellas and stories for German Literature Month and it’s easy to see why he was such a popular writer back in the day. And my next planned read is ‘The Girl and the Bomb’ by a Finnish writer Jari Järvela: it sounds very unusual and compelling.

Ooh The Girl and the Bomb does sound very intriguing! I’m looking forward to my next dose of Nicci French, author(s) you can rely on for a good story.

I’ve yet to read Nora Webster but I loved Brooklyn. It’s one of my favourite books and – just for once – I can recommend the film. Hope you’re enjoying Norah, Cleo.

It was seeing the trailer for Brooklyn which made me move this one up the list – I must see the film too!

Like the sound of The Killing of Polly Carter; anything that’s likened to Agatha Christie is usually a winner for me.

I love the more traditional mystery stories so The Killing of Polly Carter was always going to be a hit with me!

I’ve had Nora Webster on my TBR since just after it came out but have somehow never got around to reading it. I’m sure it will be brilliant though, I hope you enjoy it. I’ve yet to read any of Nicci French’s Frieda Klein series but I really must because I do love their other novels.

I’m glad to hear your enjoyed The Killing of Polly Carter. The blurb made me think of Christie, mixed with a bit of Columbo! (that’s a good thing in my opinion) 🙂

Thanks for the link 🙂 Yes The Killing of Polly Carter really reminds me of the more traditional murder mystery books of yesteryear!

I’ve only read one Colm Toibin, The Testament of Mary, which is probably rather unrepresentative but which I enjoyed a good deal anyway! At the moment I’m (aptly) reading Helen Dunmore’s A Spell of Winter, which is lush and very enjoyable thus far.

Comparing to Anna Karenina or Madame Bovaryis a big call! I hope it lives up to it!

You’re having a good week of reading, Cleo! The Thorogood does sound like a fun sort of mystery; and of course, the ‘Nicci French’ team does such a fine job with suspense.

You’re welcome – it just goes to show how long the TBR really is as this is a relatively recent find – I was shocked when I realised how long ago you reviewed it!

I started the second installment of Harry Potter and the next in the triology by Julia Quinn. I’m enjoying both. I’ve regulated my reading to the car or before I go to bed because I have so much knitting to do.
