Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My opening comes from Little Girl Gone by Alexandra Burt
Blurb
A baby goes missing. But does her mother want her back?
When Estelle’s baby daughter is taken from her cot, she doesn’t report her missing. Days later, Estelle is found in a wrecked car, with a wound to her head and no memory.
Estelle knows she holds the key to what happened that night – but what she doesn’t know is whether she was responsible… Amazon

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
Chapter 1
‘Mrs Paradise?’
A voice sounds out of nowhere. My thoughts are sluggish as if I’m running under water. I try and try but I’m not getting anywhere.
‘Not stable. Eighty over sixty. And falling.’
Oh God, I’m still alive.
I move my legs, they respond, barely, but they respond. Light prowls its way into my eyes. I hear dogs barking, high pitched. They pant, their tags clatter.
‘You’ve been in a car accident.’
My face is numb, my thoughts vague, like dusty boxes in obscure and dark attic spaces. I know immediately something is amiss.
Do you want to know more? Or perhaps you’ve already read this book?

On the basis of just that paragraph then no I wouldn’t read on. It doesn’t sound that different to zillions pf other books. But when combined with the blurb I see there is potential for something very interesting.

Yes once again I’ve picked a book with a bit of a random starting point – so far it is interesting though which is good!

I prefer the blurb to the first paragraph so I would probably read on to see what happens. I admit to hovering over the button on NetGalley but held back as I’m overwhelmed.

I read your post earlier – I’ve not requested much at all lately and I have to admit it is good to be able to read some of my own books for a change – hope you get back to a better place.

Ooh this sounds interesting! I do agree with Rebecca that the blurb is more intriguing than the first paragraph, but I’d give it the benefit of the doubt and keep reading a bit! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I hope you have a great week!

This does sound interesting but I, too, prefer the blurb to the opening paragraph. I might give it a few more pages and see if the writing grabs me.

It wasn’t the best of openings that I’ve had… it is a good read though, so far!

Thanks for sharing this, Cleo. I’m honestly not sure I’d read the book, as I think the ‘abducted child’ theme has been done. And done. But I do like the idea of the slow reveal of just what did happen that night. I’ll be interested in what you thought of it when you’ve finished.

I am enjoying this one, especially as it deals with the loss of memory (another one!) which I find fascinating… I will keep you posted 🙂

I don’t care for baby goes missing stories — too sad even though it’s just fiction. I hope you like this one.

Yes, you probably know that I’d read on. I like the inclusion of the newspaper article. I always love books that include extra things – emails, pictures, tweets, whatever.

This does sound intriguing! I like the opening, the way the narrator describes how she’s feeling, and the blurb has me wanting to know more.

I’m wondering why she’s hearing dogs in the background, and I want to know where she is. I’d keep reading to find out what happened.
Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment.
