Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My opening comes from The Tears of Angels written by Caro Ramsay. This is the sixth book in the Anderson & Costello Mystery Series and it is due to be published on 1 September 2015.
Blurb
A few days before the summer solstice a 92-year-old woman is found burned to death in her home. On the same day, a man’s mutilated corpse is discovered in a field, his arms ripped from their sockets, a Tarot card depicting The Fool inserted in his mouth.
When the victim is identified as someone for whom the police have been looking for almost a year, detectives Anderson and Costello find themselves caught up in a case where nothing is as it seems. Was the dead man really responsible for three child murders? And what is the connection with the death of the elderly woman?
The investigation leads to the tranquil shores of Loch Lomond where Anderson and Costello will finally uncover the shocking truth. NetGalley

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
Prologue
Looking across the loch the old man thought back to summers past. Golden memories of tartan rugs and sticky fingered picnics, of skinned knees and savage midges. A day spent hauling haversacks on to trams, running for trains, pulling on his mum’s hand, desperate to get to the farm.
Now, eighty years later, in the glow of the mid-summer moon, he could still make out the old farmhouse and the glimmer of a bonfire with its plume of milky smoke. It seemed closer now, but as a child the dark water between had seemed to stretch to eternity, untroubled and unbroken.

I really like the blurb to this book and haven’t read any of this series so might look it up!

It is quite a complex plot and set in the beauty of a Scottish Loch so worth a look.

It certainly does sound interesting, Cleo. And just from that first paragraph, I’m getting the sense that there is an important past/present connection here. I really do like stories where things that happened in the past have a powerful impact today. I’ll be keen to know what you thought of it when you’ve finished.

I really enjoy the past impacting the present device too and this complex plot set around a Scottish Loch has a lot to offer.

I liked the first paragraphs. A little melancholy, but I can see that the action will ramp up with the deaths mentioned in the blurb. Have you read other books in this series? Don’t think it’s one I’m familiar with.

I have to admit this isn’t the cheeriest of books but the mystery is good – I read the last one, The Night Hunter and think I read some earlier ones but as far as I could tell there isn’t a massive story arc to keep up with.

Ooh I’m going up to Scotland soon, I hope there will be no gruesome murders near any lochs then! I really liked the sound of the blurb and although the beginning takes it time it is intriguing! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I hope you have a great week!

I hope not too 🙂 The Tears of Angels took me a while to get into, it is quite a complex mystery but it was definitely worth it.

Oh, now I am very curious. The excerpt in the old man’s voice was poignant…it made me wonder how his life ended up like this. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

The writing looks good, but fortunately the blurb doesn’t appeal to me at all – unless your review changes my mind… *gets ready to growl*

Hmm, wondering if this is a serial killer story. I’d read a bit more and then decide whether it’s for me.

Those are powerful first two paragraphs and bring back lovely thoughts of youth. It doesn’t sound like an opening for a serial killer story. It sounds like the beginning of a memoir.

I agree with you that opening does have the feeling of a memoir about it.
