Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.
My current read is Redemption Road by Lisa Ballantyne which is due to be published in paperback on 16 July 2015.
Blurb
The crash is the unravelling of Margaret Holloway. Trapped inside a car about to explode, she is rescued by a scarred stranger who then disappears. Margaret remembers little, but she’s spent her life remembering little – her childhood is full of holes and forgotten memories. Now she has a burning desire to discover who she is and why her life has been shrouded in secrets. What really happened to her when she was a child? Could it have anything to do with the mysterious man who saved her life?
Flitting effortlessly between past and present, this is a suspenseful, gritty and emotionally charged journey of an estranged father and daughter, exploring the strength of family ties and our huge capacity for forgiveness. NetGalley

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro
Margaret Holloway
Thursday 5 December 2013
Margaret Holloway wrapped her scarf around her face before she walked out into the school car park. It was not long after four o’clock, but a winter pall had shifted over London. It was dusk already, wary streetlamps casting premature light on to the icy pavements. Snowflakes had begun to swirl and Margaret had blinked as one landed on her eyelashes. The first snow of the year had always brought a silence, dampening down all sound. She felt gratefully alone, walking out into the new darkness, hers the only footprints on the path. She had been too hot inside and the cold air was welcome.

The first snow always does bring silence. I love the descriptions in the opening — I’d keep reading.

It seems odd reading about snow in the summer but it does create a good scene… thanks for visiting.

The opening doesn’t do much for me, but the blurb is tantalizing.

It definitely improves, I’m hooked!

I’d read on, It sounds intriguing and, with lost memories and secrets, rather intense.

It is very compelling that’s for sure!

Hmm, it’s one that could go either way for me. A few more pages before I would know. Then again I usually am willing to give a book about 50 pages before giving up, so.
My opener post lives here if you’re interested: http://www.bookpunks.com/so-it-begins-radiant-by-karina-sumner-smith/

🙂 like you I tend to give a book a little more chance than the first paragraph and this one had me hooked well before the 50 page mark. Thanks for visiting and leaving your link!

I do. The summary hints at a good baseline for the story’s mysteries.

Oh, this does sound intriguing, Cleo! I could well imagine how one would have the drive to find out more about one’s past like that. I’ll look forward to reading your review of this when you’ve finished it.

I’m certainly hooked at the moment, I can’t imagine what it must feel like to have such a gap in your memory.

I do like cold and snow description, but I think, for me, the blurb is more intriguing. And when I went and looked, this will be a book that has one title in your world and another in mine. It will be published in the US in October under the name Everything She Forgot. Why do they do that? (sigh) Yes, I’d keep reading, for sure.

Oh the publishers and their confusing multiple titles! Having said that I’m not sure where our title comes from, yours seems more appropriate 😉 I’m enjoying it 🙂

Another author I haven’t yet experienced, but judging from the blurb and intro, I must! I love the idea of a childhood full of “holes and forgotten memories.” How intriguing!
Here’s mine: “THE MURDERER’S DAUGHTER”

Despite the opening the action soon moves to Scotland right up to close to John O’Groats which is a new destination for me… I’m really enjoying this one.

This sounds like a goodie, Cleo. I used to not like stories that jumped back and forth in time. But over the last decade or so, I’ve read several that I really liked.
I finally started doing Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros also. Mine this week is the 13th Harry Bosch story: https://madamevauquer.wordpress.com/2015/07/14/the-overlook-by-michael-connelly/

An excellent choice from you! I’m really enjoying the past story from this one and the split between the two storylines is very well executed.

I’m sure I would like this book if I read it. I have only ever struggled to finish one book. I know that feeling of silence after the first snow fall. Jury is still out if i would really like it but I love books with mysteries to unravel. My book I reviewed and gave an excerpt is Alive by Scott Sigler.
