First Chapter ~ First Paragraph (May 12)

First Chapter

Welcome to another Tuesday celebrating bookish events, from Tuesday/First Chapter/Intros, hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea Every Tuesday, Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea posts the opening paragraph (sometime two) of a book she decided to read based on the opening. Feel free to grab the banner and play along.

My current read is book eleven in the Roy Grace series; You Are Dead by Peter James. I am a huge fan of this series and was absolutely delighted to receive a copy of this one for review prior to publication on 21 May 2015.

You Are Dead

Blurb

They were marked for death.
The last words Jamie Ball hears from his fiancée, Logan Somerville, are in a terrified mobile phone call. She has just driven into the underground car park beneath the block of flats where they live in Brighton. Then she screams and the phone goes dead. The police are on the scene within minutes, but Logan has vanished, leaving behind her neatly parked car and mobile phone.
That same afternoon, workmen digging up a park in another part of the city, unearth the remains of a woman in her early twenties, who has been dead for thirty years.
At first, to Roy Grace and his team, these two events seem totally unconnected. But then another young woman in Brighton goes missing – and yet another body from the past surfaces.
Meanwhile, an eminent London psychiatrist meets with a man who claims to know information about Logan. And Roy Grace has the chilling realization that this information holds the key to both the past and present crimes . . . Does Brighton have its first serial killer in over eighty years? Amazon

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph ~ Intro

Thursday 11 December

Logan was driving fast in the pelting rain, hurrying home, glad that her shitty day which had gone from bad to worse, and then progressively worse still, was nearly at an end. She was looking forward to a large glass of chilled white wine and a sneaky cigarette out of the window before Jamie got home. The familiar Radio Sussex jingle played, then the female presenter announced it was 5.30pm and time for the news headlines. As Logan listened, with half an ear, she was blissfully unaware that by this time tomorrow evening she would be the lead item on the local news, and the subject of one of the biggest manhunts ever launched by the Sussex Police.

    1. I’m a huge fan and have been since the beginning of this series – this one is quite scary and incredibly intriguing! I’m doing that thing where I’m trying to read slowly because I know I’ll be sad when it ends and I have to wait another year for the next one!

  1. I’m with Sandra. The “little did she know” makes me feel manipulated by the author. Not that I don’t love being played like a puppet, but I don’t want to see the strings.

  2. James certainly knows how to create a first chapter with ‘punch,’ Cleo. And I do like Roy Grace. I hope you’re really enjoying this one.

    1. I’m loving it – as you know I’m a huge fan of this series and I’m at that point where I want to read at a fast rate to find out what happens whilst simultaneously trying to go slow so it isn’t over too quickly!

  3. Oh, I love how enticing this one sounds, setting us up to care about Logan, as she heads home, anticipating her chilled white wine and “sneaky cigarette.” And the opener definitely foreshadows what is to come, making me care even more. Thanks! Now I definitely want to keep reading….

    Thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. Um, yes, please! I have the first book in this series on my Kindle. Definitely want to read it. This particular one seems to start well. I’ll probably be to it in 2 or 3 years. LOL

  5. So good! Haven’t read Peter James and this looks like a long series to jump into, but perhaps I could and still understand the back-story. I love that description of driving home to sneak some wine and cigarette after a long day. Well written!

    1. I’m sure you could read this as a stand-alone but there is a very good story arc going on too but as you say committing to read 11 books is a tall order. I find his writing captivating and always look forward to the latest book
