Hosted by Lypsyy Lost & Found my Wednesday post gives you a taste of what I am reading this week. A similar meme is run by Taking on a World of Words
I am currently reading Green and Pleasant Land by Judith Cutler
Retired police detective Fran Harman discovers that someone doesn’t like her digging up the past when she re-opens a 20-year-old cold case.
Twenty years ago, a car was found abandoned, with a desperately ill baby in the back. The child’s mother was never seen again. Newly-retired, ex-Chief Superintendent Fran Harman and her partner Mark have volunteered to help reinvestigate, and it soon becomes clear key witnesses aren’t telling them the whole truth… NetGalley
I have recently finished reading Humber Boy B by Ruth Dugdall which deals sensitively with the case of a child murderer
My review will follow shortly but you can read the opening paragraph in yesterday’s post.
Next I am planning to read The Harbour Master by Daniel Pembrey
Blurb
Maverick cop Henk van der Pol is thinking about retirement when he finds a woman’s body in Amsterdam Harbour. His detective instincts take over, even though it’s not his case. But Henk’s bigger challenge is deciding who his friends are – not to mention a vicious street pimp who is threatening Henk’s own family. As his search for the killer of the woman in Amsterdam Harbour takes him into a corrupt world of politics and power, Henk finds himself facing some murky moral choices. Amazon

Humber Boy B sounds like such a good book! Might be adding that one to my TBR list 🙂

I thoroughly recommend it although the subject matter is a tough one this author has produced something quite special.

Humber Boy B does look intriguing – and has echoes to the Jamie Bulger killers. Interesting comparisons to be made perhaps with how child killers are reintegrated into society in places such as Norway (I remember reading an article about it a while ago). Look forward to your review.
I haven’t done much reading, I’ve been feeling so poorly for the last 4 days that not much has gotten done. I did however finish Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel, which was good, but not quite as good as everyone had led me to believe. I am currently reading (or not reading) The Great War by a Serbian writer Gatalica – ‘epic’ is an understatement, as it follows the destinies of about 60-70 characters from all countries during the First World War. Interesting viewpoints, but not easy reading under the circumstances, and I keep getting my names mixed up.

Yes it does, unsurprisingly as the author states in the afterword that she worked in young offender units working with people like the protagonist in this book. She does make it clear it isn’t about that crime though, even referencing that killing in the storyline. Sorry to hear you’ve been ill, are you like me and fancy a slightly different kind of read if you are under the weather? The Great War sounds interesting but requires concentration.

Oh, Cleo, I have The Harbour Master coming up soon too! And the Cutler sounds terrific. I do love present mysteries that hinge on those from the past, and this sounds like a good ‘un!

Oh that’s great news Margot, I’m looking forward to seeing what this cop in Amsterdam has to offer (I love this city and it has added interest for me because it’s where my paternal ancestors came from)

Oh, that’s so interesting! I didn’t know that, Cleo. I’ve only been to Amsterdam a couple of times, but loved my viists.

I have Humber Boy B, TBR soon, but the Judith Cutler intrigues me. I have a thing about anything that brings up the past, old secrets, cold cases – it’s a weakness of mine! Is it a new release, or something you’ve had floating around for a bit?

Humber Boy B is thoroughly recommended by me, I’m not very far into Green and Pleasant Land but like you I enjoy those cold case plot-lines. I found it on NetGalley, she’s written a lot of books and her name rings a bell but I’m not sure whether I’ve read any 😉

The Judtih Cutler one sounds as though it might be good – but as usual I’ll wait to hear what you have to say about it first…

All three titles sound so good! I really need to start reading more mystery/thriller novels soon… I’ve been neglecting that genre lately.
