Teaser Tuesday (December 16)

Kindle,jpg

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser this week is from The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters which has me completely captivated as I navigate the changes to the Wray household as Lil and Len take up residence.

The Paying Guests

Blurb

It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.
For with the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the ‘clerk class’, the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. And as passions mount and frustration gathers, no one can foresee just how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. Amazon

My Teaser

‘The stars? Did you see your future in them?’
‘Oh I know that already, don’t I?’
That was all they said. But the way in which they said it – the absolute deadness of their tones, the absence of anything like affection – took Frances aback. It had never occurred to her that their marriage might be anything other than happy.

      1. This is her sixth (I was reading an interview with her last night, that’s why I knew that!) After reading the interview I got the book out, and am torn between starting it, or saving it for over Christmas…but my willpower’s fading, especially after reading your Tuesday Teaser…I was reading one of these articles where they ask famous authors their books of the year, and Ruth Rendell said she had one problem with Sarah Waters’ books – she doesn’t write enough of them! (Mind you, she’s not as bad as Donna Tartt!)

  3. I am reading this one now, but I haven’t arrived at your teaser yet. At first, I wasn’t sure about this one, as the pace moved slowly…but then I found myself glued to the pages…waking up a couple of times during the night to read more.

Thanks for sharing! I think this one will shake things up for me…LOL. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. I can’t wait for my copy to arrive! I finally bought it for myself as a treat instead of waiting for the library to get it. I loved a few of her other books; so glad to read a “teaser” and hear how great it sounds!
