Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
My teaser this week is from The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters which has me completely captivated as I navigate the changes to the Wray household as Lil and Len take up residence.
Blurb
It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.
For with the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the ‘clerk class’, the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. And as passions mount and frustration gathers, no one can foresee just how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be. Amazon
My Teaser
‘The stars? Did you see your future in them?’
‘Oh I know that already, don’t I?’
That was all they said. But the way in which they said it – the absolute deadness of their tones, the absence of anything like affection – took Frances aback. It had never occurred to her that their marriage might be anything other than happy.
This one sounds problematically addictive and extremely mesmerizing; hope you enjoy it! 🙂
I decided to take a stroll down :Middle Grade Lane” this week 😉

Oh that sounds good although I can’t call myself a George Eliot aficionado by any stretch. I’m loving The Paying Guests and have to drag myself away from it with great reluctance….

I’ve found it to be one of those books you get drawn into, the language and the style go hand in hand with the story being told.

A new one for me. I’m curious about the dynamics of taking in these lodgers.
Thanks for stopping by my teaser!

I think it was a big thing for the Wrays to admit that they couldn’t keep the house going without lodgers hence the more acceptable name of ‘Paying Guests’

I’ll bet this one is good. I’ve never tried Sarah Waters books. I think there was one titled Fingersmith. Has she written many other books? Enjoy.

She’s written a few, Fingersmith was one as well as Tipping The Velvet both of which I’ve enjoyed… I think she’s written about three others too.

This is her sixth (I was reading an interview with her last night, that’s why I knew that!) After reading the interview I got the book out, and am torn between starting it, or saving it for over Christmas…but my willpower’s fading, especially after reading your Tuesday Teaser…I was reading one of these articles where they ask famous authors their books of the year, and Ruth Rendell said she had one problem with Sarah Waters’ books – she doesn’t write enough of them! (Mind you, she’s not as bad as Donna Tartt!)

It does seem an age since I read her last one and to be honest I’m not sure how many I’ve read of hers but I think it’s three. They are sumptuous reads though.
