1939. Eighteen year old Birdie Farr is working as a barmaid in the family pub in London. When she realises she is pregnant she turns to her mother Nellie, who asks her sister to arrange an adoption for Birdie’s new born daughter. My Teaser

Rose loved stories closer to home. Reports of vagrants stealing food from honest tables, their knapsacks bulging with other people’s belongings. The local gazette was her preferred reading It was full of dreadful stories that made them lock their door at night and fear the sounds of the isolated house.

Author:

A book lover who clearly has issues as obsessed with crime despite leading a respectable life

  1. Very interesting title, I’m tempted to read it for that alone, but I like where I think the story is going; ie. the storyline. Very interesting, nice teaser!

  2. I remember reading a Judge Dredd cartoon strip in a paper once, He was chasing this “perp” called Milton Spilk. His wife kept telling him to stop, but he pulled a gun on Dredd, so Dredd shot him. His wife went over to his body and was sobbing when Dredd came over and said “He was a perp, he pulled a gun on me, I had no choice.

There’s no point in crying over Milt Spilk

Your book title made me think of that 😀 Have a good week Cleo.

      1. It’s one of those that stuck. I read it about 20 years ago, maybe more 🙂 Amazing the things we can recall from so long ago, but we can’t remember where our keys or mobile phone are hehe

  3. Cleo – This does sound like an interesting read. I like the past/present connection as a premise, too.

  4. I wonder whether the author decided to tell the two stories at the same time or the past first and the present later! I do really like the teaser although I wonder who Rose is! Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. To be honest I’m not entirely sure of the link (and I’ve finished this now) although I think it may be linked to the rural superstitions that the sisters live by. Thanks for the visit 🙂
