Friday Finds (May 9)

Friday Finds Hosted by Should be Reading

FRIDAY FINDS showcases the books you ‘found’ and added to your To Be Read (TBR) list… whether you found them online, or in a bookstore, or in the library — wherever! (they aren’t necessarily books you purchased).

So, come on — share with us your FRIDAY FINDS!

Well my fellow bloggers for the first time since taking part in this meme no new books have been acquired this week… well with the exception of those I found at the Book Sale but I have added some books to the ‘I want to read this one too’ list.

Turning the Stones
Blurb

As a foundling the young Em Smith is brought to the Cheshire country home of the ambitious Waterland family, where she serves as a companion to their daughter, Eliza. But as they grow up, Em’s position becomes uncertain and she is increasingly troubled by the mystery of her birth. When Eliza goes in pursuit of a husband and a fortune in London, Em finds herself implicated in a horrific crime and must flee for her life.
Her frantic escape takes her across country and onto the high seas, where she is at the mercy of the enigmatic smuggler, Captain McDonagh. But there is a more potent force drawing Emily on: a spirit whose presence she has felt all her life, and whose irresistible design – be it malicious or benevolent – will force her onwards to a distant shore. There she will confront the astonishing secret of her origins. Goodreads

Write Note Reviews had an post entitled Author Insight: Meet Honey Brown which introduced me to the author and her latest book Through The Cracks which immediately made its way to the TBR.

Four-year-old Nathan Fisher disappears from the bank of a rocky creek. Did he drown or was he taken? The search for the missing boy grips the nation.
A decade later, young teen Adam Vander has grown tall enough, strong enough, to escape his abusive father. Emerging from behind the locked door of their rambling suburban home, Adam steps into a world he knows little of.
In the days that follow, with the charismatic and streetwise Billy as his guide, Adam begins to experience all that he’s missed out on. And he begins to understand that he has survived something extraordinary.
As the bond between the boys grows, questions begin to surface. Who is Adam really? Why was he kept so hidden? Was it just luck that Billy found him, or an unsettling kind of fate?
Unearthing the shocking truth of Adam’s identity will change the lives of many and put at risk a cast of flawed, desperate people. It’s a treacherous climb from the darkness. For one boy to make it, the other might have to fall through the cracks. Goodreads

Chrissi Reads always has a great selection of books on her blog and this week she featured The Wrong Boy by Suzy Zail which she highly recommends.

The Wrong Boy

Blurb

The story of a Jewish girl sent to Auschwitz with her family. She falls in love with the wrong boy – the German son of the camp commander.
Hanna is a talented pianist, and the protected second daughter of middle class Hungarian Jews. Relatively late in World War II the Budapest Jews were rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. Hanna and her mother and sister are separated from her father. Her mother becomes increasingly mentally ill until she too is taken away somewhere. Her sister Erika is slowly starving to death. Hanna is quite a naïve 15-year-old but when presented with the opportunity to play piano for the camp commander, she is desperate to be chosen. She goes each day under guard to the commander’s house and stands waiting in case the commander should want some music. Also living in the house is the commander’s son, Karl. A handsome young man who seems completely disengaged from what is happening around him. Hanna hates him as he sits drawing in the music room. But the longer Hanna goes to the house, the more she realises there are other things going on. Secret things. Karl may not be the person she thinks he is. Before she knows it she has fallen in love with the wrong boy. Goodreads

Musings from a Bookmammal featured Hidden by Catherine McKenzie which sounded like a must read (except I’m not buying books at the moment)

Hidden
Blurb

While walking home from work one evening, Jeff Manning is struck by a car and killed. Two women fall to pieces at the news: his wife, Claire, and his co-worker Tish. Reeling from her loss, Claire must comfort her grieving son as well as contend with funeral arrangements, well-meaning family members, and the arrival of Jeff’s estranged brother, who was her ex-boyfriend. Tish volunteers to attend the funeral on her company’s behalf, but only she knows the true risk of inserting herself into the wreckage of Jeff’s life. Told through the three voices of Jeff, Tish, and Claire, Hidden explores the complexity of relationships, the repercussions of our personal choices, and the responsibilities we have to the ones we love. 1. I’m new to Friday Finds (and Should Be Reading in general) so I jumped over here from the comments there this week. 🙂 By the way, LOVE your header photo. Your bookshelf, I’m guessing?
After reading through your FFs, Hidden is definitely going on my TBR list!

  2. Do you think you convinced any of us with that ‘I’m not buying books at the moment’ comment? Hah! I bet that book is on your TBR before the weekend’s out…

  4. Hmm – now I’m heading over to Chrissi reads, and (sighs) expect it will then be the basket (though I may show SOME restraint and put it in the basket for later, as books seem to be arriving from the postman (I have absolutely no idea how this happen) on a daily basis. And then I turn on my Kindle and discover new downloads. I must sleepwalk over to the PC and buy things in my sleep. Surely the conscious me can’t be so weak-willed? Surely?

    1. Well I still haven’t purchased The Wrong Boy yet but I am itching to do so. I think I might start using that excuse… “I was sleeping, I couldn’t help it!” It has been a sad couple of weeks for me with no parcels although I have ordered a box-set of Barbara Vine DVD’s (I was told not to buy more books so they don’t count!) although I have had some mystery downloads to the kindle, I really don’t know how that happened 😉
